“She almost died. I could’ve killed her.”

It didn’t take long for the network shutdown to almost claim its first casualty. Putting the entire ED into disarray creates some comic opportunities to break the tension as everyone continues to adapt to an analog system. Still, there are very real consequences of not being on top of the temporary changes.

The latter culminates in Victoria making a costly mistake that would not have occurred if business were as usual. Even before Victoria’s error, it is already a day of knocked confidences: Langdon hasn’t gained Robby’s approval, Santos’ gut was wrong about Kylie, Mohan is uncertain about her future path, and the looming deposition knocks Mel off her game. Throwing off the equilibrium further in this already pressurized environment adds an extra layer of high-stakes drama to an episode that reminds us that communication and following temporary measures are fundamental. Otherwise, patients are at risk of falling through the cracks, and the worst might happen.

Starting the episode with Dana and Robby addressing immediate concerns organically reflects the immediate state of play. Here, we also get an indicator of how overwhelmed a wide-eyed Victoria is; Robby's selective answering of questions is an efficient use of his time, and yet it is clear that not everyone is adapting as quickly as others. Yes, it did make me chuckle when Robby told Ogilvie to put his hand down, but maybe dismissing med students like this is unwise, given what happens later with Victoria (whose raised hand is ignored). This isn't even getting into the fact this is her second board-related error in as many episodes, highlighting how dizzying it is for someone who is only versed in digital technology.
