Okay, yes, but do we need to cry over being outplayed at a game?

Surprise! I know we said that Ben and I would be alternating, but when he was offered the chance to fill in at Vulture and get some extra income, who was I to stand in the way of that opportunity?

Of course, I could have been bitter about it, but that’s the game of freelance journalism. At a certain point, you need to be aware of the context in which you operate alongside other humans. As an editor who works with a stable of freelance contributors, I’m not going to hold someone accountable for hustling provided that they’re not an asshole about it (Ben asked very nicely with lots of notice).

You might have sensed by now that I’m not actually talking about journalism—I am talking about Survivor. When Dina returns to their camp after the tied tribal council, things are quiet, because ultimately feelings have been hurt. Eric believed that Kilby was his friend, and he’s mad that Kilby…played the game in front of him. He views it as a personal betrayal, the biggest he’s ever experienced, and it’s a mindset that I’m never going to understand. This wasn’t a long-term alliance. This wasn’t a dirty play. This was making a big move, and choosing to stick with Lewis instead of Eric. How do you go on Survivor and choose to hold a grudge over something like this?
