Review: Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, "Spoiler: Corn Is Delicious" | Season 1, Episode 6
In which we reach the point where sitcom and streaming can no longer peacefully coexist
I promised in the review for episode 1 that we would be diving into what this BBT spinoff artifact means for television in the year of our Lord 2026. So far I’ve focused more on the nuts and bolts of the episode-centric premise, its riffs on classic tropes and nerd culture, and how those intersect with crazy-short runtimes. I’d argue that these topics are important for the larger question, since they relate to intentional choices of structure, topic, and tone. But this week I think we’ve got a chance to look at that bigger picture.
“Spoiler: Corn Is Delicious” has a surfeit of ideas that feel weirdly untethered to the patterns the series has set up so far. I don’t think there’s an existing trope of humans having cattle characteristics that is being referenced; it’s almost like we started with Planet of the Apes and went down so many rabbit holes that the inspiration is unrecognizable. The most notable recurring joke—characters regurgitating cud into their mouths—is stunningly off-putting. The story point that Stuart is needed for the machine to work feels like a way to preempt the question of why the group doesn’t split up, and yet the falling-into-the-void scenes seem to go on forever, as if the creative team is trying to avoid the impression that it’s only exposition. Was this episode made on a dare?
